Coaching Clinics

Thepurpose of the NCCP Coaching Courses, the Hockey Canada Safety andSpeak Out Programs, as well as the Hockey Alberta Checking Skills is toprovide Hockey Alberta's Membership with the fundamental understandingof the theoretical and technical aspects of the game of hockey. HockeyAlberta's goal is to ensure that all coaches have the requiredqualifications that are needed to coach minor hockey.

These professionally facilitated courses also provide members with continuing education opportunities. 

National Coaching Certification Program

Intro to Coach Level

Overview

Coachesattend a four hour course, which reviews the basic tools they will needin the areas of leadership, communication, teaching skills, and lessonplanning. All this is taught with the special considerations of theyoungest athletes in mind. Coaches qualified in the NCCP - Intro toCoach Level receive a manual that provides progressive practice plans.The practice plans are tailor-made for teaching the beginner to ensuretheir first experience with hockey is fun and positive. This manualeliminates much of the planning necessary to ensure a fun and effectivepractice and remove much of the demand from coaches who often findthemselves with little time to plan their practices.

Who Should Attend?

The NCCP - Intro to Coach is a required course for registered coaches working with Initiation players (5-6 year olds);however, it is not necessarily targeted to the inexperienced coach.This exceptional program shows coaches how to teach hockey's basicskills while keeping the theme of their practices with an emphasis onfun and fundamentals.

Qualification Requirements

Qualification is based solely on attendance. 100% attendance is required.

Thereis no prerequisite course to the NCCP - Intro to Coach. Participantswho successfully complete the program will receive an NCCP – Intro toCoach attendance card from Hockey Alberta.

National Coaching Certification Program

Overview

TheNCCP Coach Level course is the first level of the National CoachingCertification Program (NCCP). This Coach Level course follows thecompetency based education and training method of learning and is anexcellent course for all new and recreational level coaches. The NCCPCoach Level will provide an introduction to player development and willteach coach knowledge, skills and attitudes in the following areas:

    • How to communicate effectively with athletes and parents.
    • How to support the athlete in a team environment.
    • How to support the athlete in the training environment.
    • How to support the athlete in a practice environment.
    • How to support the athlete in a game environment.

TheNCCP Coach level emphasizes basic skills and the importance of havingplayers develop confidence, self-esteem and a love for the game. Thecourse also incorporates the official teaching curriculum of HockeyCanada and Hockey Alberta with the Hockey Canada Skills Series.

TheSpeak Out Certification program is an educational program to impact onthe attitudes, skills and knowledge of the coach/instructor that willresult in a safe, sportsmanlike environment for all players.

At the end of this seminar coaches should be able to:

    • Define bullying, harassment and abuse
    • Know the difference between bullying, harassment and abuse
    • Understand and apply prevention strategies
    • Apply response skills to bullying, harassment and abuse
    • Demonstrate a positive attitude towards becoming leaders in establishing safe, sportsmanlike environments for all players

Thiscourse is conducted as a nine and a half ( 8 hr. Coach and 1.5 hr.Speak Out Certification) hour day of classroom activity. At theconclusion of the course, the coaches have completed the Pre Task,in-class component and Post Task of the NCCP Coach Level as well as thePre-Task, in class component and Post Task of Speak Out. Coach levelrequires completion of the Post Task Assignments highlighted on theMentor Letter.

 Who Should Attend?

All coaches coaching 7-14 year old players, Novice, Atom, Peewee A, B, C, D, Bantam A, B, C, D, and Midget A, B, C, D.

Allteams registering with Hockey Alberta must have one (1) member of theregistered team officials attend a Speak Out Clinic by December 31 andbe on the bench at all games.

Certification Requirements (available in NCCP Coach Level Only):

Certificationis based on three (3) core components: seminar Pre-task, in-classcourse work and completion of Post Task Mentor Letter Assignments.Participants who attend the NCCP Coach clinic will receive averification of attendance card for the NCCP program. Participants whosuccessfully complete the mentor letter assignment of the NCCP Coachclinic will receive a NCCP certificate verifying certification in theNCCP Coach level. Participants who successfully complete the Post Taskassignment of Speak Out will receive a verification of attendance card.

Hockey Canada Safety Program

Overview

Theultimate goal of this program is to have safety persons, coaches, andmanagers implement injury prevention and safety through risk managementand education. This will be accomplished by providing the SafetyPerson(s) with risk management, safety tools and information to allowthem to implement effective injury prevention and risk managementprograms where safety is the first priority at all the levels. Thiswill be accomplished by every team having a qualified Safety Person atevery game who is focused on the safety and well being of the players.

Who Should Attend?

This program is targeted at volunteers who find themselves in the role of a Safety Person. It may be one of the following:

    1. Coach 4. Team Manager
    2. Assistant Coach 5. Drivers for out of town games
    3. Parent who helps out

Certification Requirements:

Qualification is based on 100% attendance and successful completion of an exam.

There is no equivalency for this course.

AllHockey Alberta teams must have one (1) person registered to their teamthat has completed the Hockey Canada Safety Program and be at allgames. Teams failing to adhere to this regulation may jeopardize theireligibility for Provincial, Regional, and National Playoffs.

Thequalification for this program is valid for a period of three (3)hockey seasons from the date of the clinic attended to August 01 of thethird hockey season. A clinic season is from August 1, 20___ to July31, 20___.

Re-qualification:

Re-qualificationis based on 100% attendance and successful completion of an exam.Re-qualification is valid for a period of three (3) hockey seasons. Itdoes not require a new manual. (Participant must review manual prior tocourse and bring their manual to the course.) It is a half-day program,which can be completed at any certification program throughout the nine(9) zones.

Speak Out Against Abuse & Harassment

An Education Program On The Prevention Of Bullying, 
Harassment and Abuse In Hockey

Overview:

Aneducational program to impact on the attitudes, skills and knowledge ofthe coach/instructor that will result in a safe, sportsmanlikeenvironment for all players.

At the end of this seminar coaches should be able to,

  1. Define bullying, harassment and abuse
  2. Know the difference between bullying, harassment and abuse
  3. Understand and apply prevention strategies
  4. Apply response skills to bullying, harassment and abuse
  5. Demonstrate a positive attitude towards becoming leaders in establishing safe, sportsmanlike environments for all players

There is no prerequisite course to the Speak Out Program.

Qualification is based on 100% attendance.

Participantswho successfully complete the course will receive a Speak Out ProgramCertificate, located in the participants’ manual.

Hockey Alberta Checking Skills

Overview

HockeyAlberta has developed in conjunction with Bjorn Kinding, one of theworld’s best skill developing instructors, a new comprehensive checkingskills course. In this course coaches attend a seven (7) hour coursethat reviews and educates them on the basic tools they require to teach:

    • Review of basic lead up checking skills, skating, angling, body positioning
    • How to body check.
    • How to take a body check.
    • Drills that implement these skills.
    • Principals of respect for your opponent, sportsmanship and human values.

Theclinic emphasizes basic checking skills and the importance of havingplayers develop confidence, self-esteem and an awareness of thechecking process.

Thiscourse can be conducted as a five (5) hour day of classroom activitywith a one (1) hour ice session and may also have one (1) hour ofdry-land. At the conclusion of the course, the coaches have beeneducated in the proper teaching techniques while reinforcing theimportance of awareness in leading minor-aged persons in a physicalcontact sport.

Who Should Attend?

Itis required that all Pee Wee level head coaches attend. All coaches whoare coaching Atom and above hockey players are recommended to attendthe Checking Skills clinic. However, coaches at all levels areencouraged to attend.
